The other night the Lord gave me a dream where I was with my children in my hometown of PA in present time but yet before me was a dirt road from back in the time of the civil war with a horse drawn wagon and a young family getting ready to travel across country. I felt like the Lord was directing us to take this trip with them into the past in which myself and my kids were to learn the roads traveled across America.
The interesting part was I was very much in present time yet it was like the Father cut a pathway through America on this road that interfaced with our current time but this road was back in the time when people were beginning to move west and expand territories.
I believe this young couple represented my previous generation family members (A husband and pregnant wife). I had been given specific direction from God how my girls and I could travel this without causing harm to ourselves or the people who actually existed on the road and wagon.
God directed us to make sure we kept the wagon on the road and didn’t go off path into our current time but to pay attention to the story the land revealed and to pray for healing over the land before we traveled it. I had a sense that we were going to learn some powerful lessons from our past that we needed for this current season. Yet, it wasn’t just about learning, it was about bringing healing and restoration to this land. It was about repenting on behalf of our previous generations for the blood that was spilled and the wrong choices we had made in our past.
Something else interesting was happening, I noticed at one point we started to get off track and when we did it was like the women’s pregnant belly grew too quickly so we had to get back on track and I would lay hands on her and things would calm down.
I truly believe this was a call for us to begin to teach our children not necessarily the history lessons that have been filtered through through the years. But to begin to dig into history for ourselves as the Lord leads. Not to teach from a text book but to learn from all perspectives the stories of our past and to learn and pray for healing.
A few weeks ago, I watched a movie called TA ATA On Netflix. The movie was written and directed based on the true story of a young Native American women who was the first to go to college and make it to broadway but was led to tell her people’s stories throughout the country and eventually the world. This was during a time when Indians who held onto there traditions and didn’t worship God the same way, were treated as savages and lost the rights that other people had. It was because of the stories she told and her journey that she changed the hearts of kings and presidents and leaders not just in the US but in other nations.
I truly believe we as a nation have great lessons to learn from stories like hers and others. Not just to understand, but to grow from, pray healing over our land and family lines so that we as a nation do not make the same mistakes of our previous generations. This isn’t just about Social Justice from the narrative the world gives, this is God’s justice for all creation.
God is calling us to dig into history and learn and pray over the sins of our past that have broke and wounded creation in so many ways.
“I am sure what we are suffering now cannot compare with the glory that will be shown to us. In fact, all creation is eagerly waiting for God to show who his children are. Meanwhile, creation is confused, but not because it wants to be confused. God made it this way in the hope that creation would be set free from decay and would share in the glorious freedom of his children. We know that all creation is still groaning and is in pain, like a woman about to give birth. The Spirit makes us sure about what we will be in the future. But now we groan silently, while we wait for God to show that we are his children. This means that our bodies will also be set free.”
